While there were no shortage of function-focused modernists in the mid-20th century, Kramer was perhaps the most extreme. The Dutch designer once said, “If form does not contribute to function, it has no right to exist.” Born in Amsterdam in 1922, the son of avant-garde architect Piet Kramer, Frisseau studied architecture, industrial design, electrical engineering, and interior design. One of his most famous seating pieces and a darling of Dutch mid-century modernism, the 1953 Revolt chair embodies Kramer’s design philosophy of function above all else; its skeletal industrial form provides maximum comfort and ergonomic support with a minimum of material.
